There is always something exciting to see when clients come to us with a vision in mind of what they want in a home. What is even more exciting is when the home is themed. Themes like tropical, European and colonial pose a distinct criterion of design elements that must be met to pull off the look but at the same time recreating such distinct elements provides a playground of creativity for our designers which is always interesting to watch. The colonial theme in particular has been an identifiable icon of architecture in Singapore’s heritage. Bringing something from the past and recreating it for present day living produces an opulent remake of a historical gem. This issue we take a look at one such gem and the latest Black and White Colonial request.
A corner bungalow within a tranquil and relatively quiet estate in Changi, the home naturally exhibits its grandeur and details of design through the entire width which faces the main road leading into the rest of the estate. Much like a time warp, the black and white colonial style bungalow shines like a gem among its neighbours.
Upon entering through the main gate, the forethought and detail in pulling out the traditional authenticity of a black and white colonial home is immediately apparent. This home drew inspiration from the details of the original form channeling through from its shape, the metal fencing that wraps the boundary of the property, a strict black and white façade paying much attention to detail in the black bordering accents, the exposed roof rafters shading the car porch as well as the supply of greenery that illuminates vivaciously in contrast to the stark monotone nature of the home’s façade.
A signature feature of Nic & Wes homes is the abundance of natural light and ventilation. Full length French doors and windows generously pave much of the various communal rooms which overlook the side land of a picturesque view of the indigo mosaic pool.
Tucked away to the back portion of the home, a spacious wet kitchen keeping with the black and white trend includes a substantial amount of table space and cabinetry creating the practicality for preparation and heavy cooking.
Heading up the staircase to the second level, the configuration of the stairwell mimics much of the old style – discreet and hidden away. But unlike much of the older stairwells that can appear eerie, the addition of a glass window midway through the landing keeps the enclosed stairwell lit throughout.
Tucked away on the second level are the family’s respective bedrooms. To one side, the children’s bedrooms are designed in an almost mirror-image composition with a similar ensuite bathroom and walk-in closet. Surrounding the main bedroom areas, the use of full length French windows accompanied with banisters gives that balcony-like feel within the rooms.
To the other side, the master bedroom spans almost one-third of the 2nd level. A rather private layout the bedroom features an extended walk-in wardrobe space that leads into the opulent master bathroom. Spacious to say the least, the dominant black amidst the vintage styled decorative tiles were very much that of the owners’ choice which revealed a fearlessly chic bathroom.
A highlight of the second level derives from a singular space that connects two rooms; that being the spacious yet intimate balcony area which overlooks the picturesque view of the neighboring homes. Balconies are one such space that many do not find value in yet, creates a conducive setting to entertain, unwind, and connects the family on the second floor.
A postcard worthy abode, homes like these clearly display the value and beauty of house-proud homeowners which is very much in-line with the Nic & Wes Builders’ motto – Designing and Building Lifestyle Homes To Be Proud Of!
