IN FOCUS: HGTV HAS REACHED OUR SHORES by Nicole Kow
If you haven’t heard, HGTV has made its way to our shores and Asia thanks to Scripps Network and Starhub. The home and living related channel is now available on Starhub Channel 437.
We had the pleasure of attending the invite-only HGTV Asia Housewarming Party a couple of days back that took place at the Botanic Gardens within a conserved Black & White Colonial Home. The intimate affair was filled with celebs, industry people and a growing fan base of the channel which only started airing in Singapore in last December. However, no launch party would be complete without a guest appearance. Jonathan and Drew Scott better known as The Property Brothers made an appearance at the party as the representatives for the channel. The multi-talented twin brothers not only work their magic with real estate but also showcased their other talents - Jonathan performed a magic trick and Drew sang and played the guitar.
My family and I first caught hold of HGTV on our trip to the US in 2006 and were ecstatic to find the channel now available on local cable. Being huge fans, channel 437 is constantly the channel of choice at our home. This issue I shall highlight a couple of shows not to be missed on the HGTV Asia Channel.
The Property Brothers
Twin brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott are a complimentary sibling duo. Drew is a Real Estate Agent and Jonathan is a Contractor. Together the two join forces to acquire fixer-upper homes for couples recreating them into dream homes. Starting off with giving owners a reality check on their budget and wishlist, the brothers then propose a plan to the couple to incorporate their wishlist and budget with the help of their magic renovation touches to create a dream home that their clients desire.
High Low Project
Ever wanted an interior design look in your home but the price tag is too high to turn it into a reality? Sabrina Soto will prove you wrong… and in a good way. Taking on the challenge to decorate a specific room of the owner's choice based on their taste without a budget and then brilliantly recreating an almost identical look and feel on a shoe-string budget. The High Low Project dashes the ideology that creative living means breaking the bank and that bargain hunting and smart sourcing is the way to go.
A showcase series, Extreme Homes takes a look at diversely unique homes from around the world. Focusing on strong design architecture, each of the homes featured really pushes the envelope breaking the mould of conventional. For each featured home, the passionately proud homeowners take viewers on a complete walkthrough highlighting the features and inspiration that propelled them to boldly go where no homeowner has gone before to create nothing short of an extreme home.
Host Nicole Curtis is an advocate for reviving and restoring old, tarnish gems in the form of what other than old properties. Tirelessly she takes a hands-on approach as project manager, DIY-er and contractor to preserve neglected and dilapidated historical homes bringing it back to its former glory and more before putting it on the market for sale. She also shares useful tips for viewers who love restoring antique home pieces.
The newest addition to the HGTV Asia channel lineup which hasn’t even aired yet but is one to keep an eye out for come March 2nd. A similar concept to The Property Brothers, Fixer Upper is spearheaded by husband and wife couple Chip and Joanna Gaines who help couples source for a new nest after which go on to redesigning the place to create a home. She-boss Joanna takes the lead to design and decorate while her husband Chip is hands-on with the construction work while adding to the comic relief with his zany antics. Together they create a one-stop shop service providing a seamless home-build journey for their clients.
HGTV Asia is currently available as a free preview channel on Starhub Channel 437 until 30 June 2015.
