IN FOCUS: CARPENTRY WITH NIC & WESBy Nicole Kow
When Nic & Wes began in 2002, there was always a vision to work towards being a complete one-stop shop. This entailed that the design & build would branch out to either work strategically with partner companies and/or creating an in-house solution which in turn gives us better control over scheduling and increasing the efficiency of the work completion. Fast forward to 2017 and we can see that vision being realized. From its humble beginnings as a main contractor, Nic & Wes has expanded into Solar Installation, Pools and Interior Design with a dedicated department focusing on carpentry. All these departments compliment the core for that full-service experience while simultaneously providing an ala-carte menu of services for clients looking only on focused works.
One of the main delays before a home completion comes from carpentry, thus we saw this as an opportunity to gain better control over the process. Offered as an optional service in the provisional sums, clients have the flexibility to either engage us or choose another. Choosing the add-on service together with the main works allow better in-house communication and collaboration within our design and carpentry teams. In this issue, we take a look at some of the works from our carpentry department.
One of the most desired places for carpentry lies in the kitchen. Within its array of layouts, one cannot run away from carpentry in this part of the home.
Design and practicality play an integral part in making the space both visually pleasing and functional. For these featured projects, our design team together with our clients were able to communicate their vision fully with our carpentry department whom were then able to execute as accurately as possible.
Even the most minute details in cabinetry such as choosing the right moulding accents need to tie in together with the rest of the home which is especially vital in open-concept kitchens.
If going the unconventional route and opting for an unusual color palette, our designers are able to merge potential thoughts into the visual 3d concept that allow our clients to step out of their comfort zone giving them the opportunity to go for unusual rather than settle for normal.
Merging design with cabinetry isn’t just about dumping one component with another but it is essentially an art. Thus bringing these two departments together can maximise space potential. Much like this bathroom which expanded out into the master bedroom allowed the accommodation of a vanity top with storage.
Similarly when colours and patterns are the highlight of the space, it is important that all involved are on the same page. Picking the right shade and material will create a beautiful balance of design which can only be achieved through clear communication and foresight. Thus the familiar relationship across our departments allows us to enhance design elements with ease.
One of the more flexible areas to include cabinetry but not mandatory is the living room or entertainment space. Especially with an open-concept kitchen located nearby, including a casual bar spot is a great way to up the chic factor of the home.
Space planning in any area is part and parcel of the process and cabinetry features can aid in making the home as conducive as possible. A wall cabinet unit with exposed and concealed features keeps the place as neat and minimalist as possible. Similarly with the addition of a movable TV bracket, the television becomes functional across the entire living, dining and kitchen spaces.
For a secondary entertainment space, a kitchenette may be a great feature especially if located away from the main level. As the purpose of a kitchenette is for light entertaining, the space and storage requirements are less. It is important though that during the planning stages, any appliances to be integrated into the space is highlighted.
Especially important for extensive projects, co-ordination, co-operation and open communication between the various parties will ensure a smooth and timely completion. For existing space makeovers, careful preparation and planning will provide a satisfied repurpose of the space. Thus Nic & Wes extends our cabinetry service either as a tie-in or standalone option tailoring it to fit our individual clients’ needs.
