IN FOCUS: BLOGS ABOUT IT by Nicole Kow
These days, blogs have taken over the Internet by storm and while journalists may scour at the questionable integrity of bloggers, blogs have been the IT place to gather news, inspiration and ideas nonetheless. These simple yet effective viral sites are not just targeted to attract one particular country but the world sharing and inspiring like-minded folk. Whether it be fashion talking about the latest trends and hot styles or travel spots not to miss out, this sharing nature of blogging stimulates an endless channel of knowledge on any given field of interest.
Similarly the topics of architecture and interior design contributes to the vast stratosphere of blogging. This issue I’ll be sharing with you a bunch of useful links to browse through and might very well be useful when trying to redesign or redecorate your crib.
Created with the focus to showcase “architecture and design with warmth, texture, sustainability and beauty”, this blog/magazine is an easy-to-navigate page that organizes architecture, interiors, landscape, ideas and objects in succinct taskbar of ease for article searches. Each article includes a short yet effective insight about the property in focus before laying out a buffet of visuals highlighting the essence of the article's angle.
With an aim to maximise and highlight the creative potential of small spaces, Apartment Therapy is a useful resource to bookmark. Focusing on economical yet effective solutions, this blog is filled with useful tips and tricks for DIY projects to restore, hack and improve furniture pieces to enhance a small space. Rather product oriented, many posts include useful and interesting home décor products available in the market. Proving that one doesn’t have to break the bank to beautify a space, this site encourages readers to use creativity and inspiration to turn home spaces into a functional yet aesthetic playground of sorts.
Named “Best Architectural Blog In The World” in 2012 by UK newspaper the Independent as well as included in Time magazine’s Design 100 list of the most influential forces in global design among its slew of recommendations and awards, this site comprises of showcasing quality design and interior projects worldwide. Targeted at the professionals of the industry while still interesting and informative for amateurs, the posts range from walkthroughs to industry news and views.
A picture paints a thousand words so words aren’t needed with this blog. While a very basic layout, the images take centre stage. Not much like a typical blog, The Architecture Blog consists of just images of vivid design and architecture photos taken from across the world wide web.
Founded by Holly Becker who is an award-winning and best-selling author, journalist, interior stylist and workshop leader, Décor8 started as an avenue to write about what she was passionate about as well as to encourage others to lead a creative life. The blog since its inception in 2006 has expanded with a group of monthly contributors working together with Holly Becker as editor to share decorating ideas, interior spaces, opinions and interesting finds among other things.
Run by two interior design junkies from across the globe who have never met, they showcase an interesting mix of unique spaces. Like its name suggests, the blog does aim to inspire with the intricacies of space decorating as well as the varied designs of architecture through a collection of well-taken photography.
Founded by interior design enthusiast, Daniel, this blog started out as his portal of inspiration to feature homes that deemed interesting and inspiring. Another well organized blog, this site organises its posts based on architecture, apartments, around the world, bathrooms, interior, kitchens, study/office and more. Keeping writings to a minimal summary, the large photos showcase interesting properties from around the world.
While the title is far from appropriate, the images are visually inspiring. Run by two ordinary folk – one from California and the other from Sydney, they set up this blog to post interesting images of interior design ranging from kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, swimming pools, staircases and even exterior design. While the 2 bloggers running this site have no background in architecture or design they do have a keen eye for interesting design. This is a good photo resource to look through and you could even submit a photo of an interesting part of your home… who knows, your home design might be posted.
