IN THE PIPELINE: HANDY APPS by Nicole Kow
The capabilities of smart phones these days are pushing the boundaries with effective and productive apps easily available in virtual stores like the Apple App Store and the Android Market. It seems that there is an app these days for just about everything including home-worthy apps. From inspiration to design to projects to handy-man apps, the varieties continue to shock and surprise.
This month we delve into the home improvement arena where these apps will have you prepared for those little home projects that’ll make room revamps a little easier.
An extremely useful tool to have, a spirit level is designed to determine whether a surface is horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). Especially convenient tool to have when putting up paintings and décor on the wall, it will assure straight positioning. The level also measures angles, verticality of a wall or furniture etc. Now available right on the phone, this nifty app allows pre-measurement calibration to assure accuracy.

Forget painstaking time to get the measurements of a space on paper. Photo Measures reduces the trouble with just a click of the button… well almost. Snapping a photo of a room or object to input the needed dimensions of the space now becomes easy. This app also allows the addition of comments when measurements are not enough. Choosing from imperial or metric unit, Photo Measures also allows easy organization of photos by categorizing and then saving them in high resolution images to the photo library which can also be easily emailed out through the app exporting it in pdf or jpg format. Existing photos can also be imported in as well for easy measurement mapping.

Similar to Photo Measures, this app is available for the Android Market as well as the Appstore. A powerful app, it stores dimensions, angles and text within the photo of the desired space of object for future reference.
Paint Tester Pro
Ever wanted to know what a room would look like in a new color? Paint Tester Pro gives rooms a clear visual of color experimentation without the mess. By taking a photo of the space, choose from the variety of hues in the color palette provided and let the painting begin. With the smart brush tool, painting will not bleed on well-lit photos. An useful app to have before deciding a room makeover.

From the iHandy app series, this paid app is packed with a convenient carpenter’s tool kit. Five tool are included in this kit – a plumb bob, a bubble level bar, a steel protractor and a steel ruler. On top of that the plumb bob, surface level and level bar can double up as a inclinometer/clinometer once calibrated to read angles. There is no need to carry around a carpenter’s tool kit once you have this app on your phone.
IKEA SmartList Pro
– SGD 1.28
Going green this app allows shopping at Ikea convenient without the use of in-store shopping list and pencil. Just scan or key in the product code and this virtual shopping list will process items neatly with the displaying the price, product and collection points. The custom ordering feature allows product list to be organized by name, price, weight or location in the store. Above that, a manual walkthrough is available for each product before purchase.
A pretty amazing app to have when planning to re-decorate a space or need a floor plan, MagicPlan measures and creates a floor plan just by taking photos from the phone camera. Following the provided in-app tutorials, a floor plan will be generated within minutes without the need of measuring tapes or fancy programing. The completed floor plan can be received via email in JPG,PDF and DXF formats however for the free use, floor plans will be watermarked.
Metrics Conversion – Unit Conv
Don’t fret about manually converting imperial to metric and vice versa, this app does it. A simple setup - choose between the units of conversion, add in the values and watch the conversion happen. Easy as that!
IN MY OPINION: EUROPEAN INSPIRATIONBy Brian Kow
My eyes have been opened by European Architecture to understand that what we may consider as bad workmanship - spalling concrete, irregular wall finishes and damaged plaster exposing the raw bricks, is architecture actually seen through sheer weathering and exposure through time is a thing of beauty that has an interesting history in its being.
Yet at the same time it is an interesting sight to see how old, conserved buildings lining the little alleyways create a quaint nostalgic ambience that is much appreciated not just by tourists but treasured by the locals as well.
Hmmm.... Wonder what it would be like if we were to create a row of Classical styled homes encompassing the intricacy and charm so popular during that era? Maybe that would be something to consider in the future.
Amenities: Close proximity to both local and international schools (CHIJ Primary Toa Payoh, Anglo-Chinese School, SJI International School, Balestier Hill Primary School), supermarkets, bus-stops and the upcoming Mt. Pleasant MRT.
