IN FOCUS: MOBILE CONTROLBy Nicole Kow
Smartphones and tablets have quite seamlessly become an extension of our lives. Without them, many of us feel rather lost. We look to it to keep in contact, to schedule or lives, to entertain us and even control our surrounding environment. Yes, smartphones and tablets are there to make life a whole lot easier whether we like it or not.
Another thing that has made life a whole lot more convenient is home automation. There are more electronic devices coming out that contribute to efficiency which are also integrating with our extended limb. This month we look at a couple of products that work with our smartphones and tablets which are useful to have in the home.
Belkin Wemo Switch
Available at Popular $99
A Wi-Fi enabled switch which allows you to control electronic devices easily from your smartphone. Connect electronic devices like lights, fans, televisions, stereos among other things to the Wemo Switch from a regular 120v wall outlet. By downloading the WeMo App from the respective app stores, your smartphone becomes the control centre to switch electronic devices on and off or even schedule them over a Wi-Fi connection.
Phillips Hue Connected Bulb (Starter Pack)
Available at Amazon - US$199.97
While it has yet to reach our shores, this product was worth a mention. The bulbs include LED technology that customizes any spectrum of the colour wheel. Decide which lamps or lights you would want to customize and simply screw in the Hue bulbs. An included hue bridge connects to the wireless router linking your smartphone commands to the bulbs. The Phillips Hue app allows you to customize the bulbs to your liking. From mood to intensity to hue, this set creates the atmosphere you want in your home.

The BDP-160 is 3D Blu-ray disc player with a little more. With built-in Wi-Fi, you can stream videos and music from your smartphones. As the player is DLNA Certified, it is possible to pair certified products together in your home network. That means it is possible to play contents from a computer in another room. The complementing Pioneer’s ControlApp allows smartphones to control the basic functions of the Blu-Ray player.
Samsung 55" HD Smart TV F8000

An interactive and app-oriented LED television, the Samsung Smart TV series revamps the basic picture-box bringing it to the 21st century. The Smart TV also includes a motion and voice sensor to control the television. Smartphones can integrate as an extension with the Samsung-control app. The Smart View app allows them to work as a remote control and even act as a second screen pulling live broadcast programs or videos onto the smartphones or tablet screens.

IN MY OPINION: THINKING ALOUDBy Brian Kow
The curbs that have been put forth to prevent over leverage in the property market has cooled the somewhat buoyant market in the hope of preventing a bubble from forming and then bursting, notwithstanding affordability. I do believe this is a healthy stand would provide for a more gradual and sustainable market.
None the less, we are still a small red dot with limited land and with an expectation of an increasing population. Whether domestic or imported, there would still be a necessity of providing housing for this growth.
Looking at the 3 sectors of housing - HDB, Private Apartments/Condominiums and Landed Houses, one that singularly stands out as the least efficient form of utility of space would be Landed Houses and more prominently the freehold ones.
I just can't help but wonder if this property sector, through time, would prove to be a more sourced out property type and the limitation in supply would prove to be the "unpolished diamond".
Just thinking aloud!
