IN FOCUS: THE STAYCATION CALLED HOME By Nicole Kow
As the end of the year is drawing to a close, planning for vacations may be the highlight for most. A break from the monotony of work and daily life is a yearning feel that cannot be ignored and that’s when the internet tabs explode with travel possibilities. Vacations seem to be closely linked with escapism and reboot, a way to revitalize the mind and spirit. Upon realizing that I nor the rest of the family has taken a vacation since September of last year, we could not help but ponder on the lack of urgency to travel. A reflective piece of writing for this month’s issue, I delve into the reason why travel has become somewhat secondary in our lives.
Travelling as a family has always been something exciting to look forward to and a chance for family bonding. However, in recent years, planning for a trip or two at most has become less of a priority. Over a cup of coffee and conversation, we discussed this very change in enthusiasm.
Age is a possibility for my parents or even work schedules and building the business could be another reason. But ultimately, we agreed that if there was a will there was a way to make the next vacation happen. So, what else could it be?
After much thought, we collectively concluded that it was because we truly loved being home. When our home was built nine years ago, we created it with these very ideas in mind:
1. To create a Tropical Villa atmosphere that mimicked the Balinese feel which was one of our favourite travel destinations.
2. To include spaces that brought the family together.
3. To include amenities that were functional and fun at the same time.
Nine years later, our home is still a key project that reflects the epitome of a Nic & Wes Lifestyle Home. While it has much to do with emotion, to break it down into words it is a place that the family yearns to return to at the end of the day. A place that brings the family together. A place that intertwines with the activities of the family, reflects them and more.
As Brian mentioned during this conversation of reflection, “create a home that you do not need a vacation from” holds true. Our home has become a base; once our work is over, we yearn to return back to unwind, reflect and recuperate daily. It is a sanctuary that is created with open, connecting spaces filled with greenery and a pool which oozes the ambience of tranquillity and relaxation.
Basic shell rooms were converted into entertainment spaces including an intimate movie theatre, a compact gym as well as communal family spaces by the pool and open roof terrace.
It is not uncommon even while on vacation that we are waiting to return home. This pull factor is something we strive to accomplish in every home we create. It goes deeper than building a statuesque house but creating value and vision with a heart that the family can connect with which we translate within walls. Thus, if you are looking to go beyond house and instead create a home that inspires, connects and restores then you may be the homeowner that understands the vision we thrive on.
