IN FOCUS: 5 PLACES TO BUY HOME DECOR ONLINEBy Nicole Kow
Are you about ready to move in to your new nest? Or do you need something new to add to your current abode? If yes, then this issue is for you! I’ve recently revamped my bedroom and taking time to travel from one furniture shop to another and not finding what I wanted was just not cutting it for me. Going from shop to shop has its plus points; like seeing and inspecting the actual product but it’s hard to cover so much ground when you’re on the move. There is a limited variety to what is available at a shop as compared to hitting the web. This issue, I’ll be highlighting five places to shop from in the comforts of your home to satisfy your household goods indulgences.
A popular website for many homeowners looking to furnish their home, Taobao is a China-based e-commerce mall with tons of vendors selling almost everything you need. When shopping on Taobao, you will require two additional tabs to be opened – Google Translate and 65daigou. Google Translate comes in especially handy while doing searches. As the default language is Mandarin, you will be required to search in Mandarin. That means writing what you would like to search for in Google Translate followed by copying and pasting the translated search in Taobao. Using Chrome as your browser will further help you understand the content with its translate feature. As for 65daigou, the intermediary company will logistically handle the buying and delivering of your purchases. For every item you intend to purchase, copy and paste the link on 65daigou. Once consolidated, you will then be asked to wait for the items to arrive at the warehouse and payment thereafter. Do note that shipping fees are not stated within the price tag on Taobao and will be reflected once it is received on 65daigou’s end.
Hipvan is dedicated solely to home and living items. Ranging from furniture, décor and accessories, it’s a great resource to head to if you want to give physical shops a miss. You can expect more mid-range products that are design-focused. Also photos uploaded are of the actual product which lacks in many other e-stores. While browsing through the items, the listings provide an estimated waiting time for the respective item which comes in handy when deciding on whether to purchase or not. Hipvan also provides 14 days free return policy that makes it easy to send back if you change your mind.
A multi-category e-mall, Lazada sells a good variety of branded and no-frill household goods. The stockist include not just furniture, décor and accessories but appliances as well. It’s almost as good as having Courts, Best and Harvey Norman in one location! Each listing states the shipping cost and options, estimated delivery date and warranty (where applicable). Depending on the product, cash on delivery is a feature that may be included. Hesitant to purchase? Lazada offers 100% buyer protection which gives buyers more peace of mind.
Aliexpress is much like a hybrid of Taobao and Lazada. Based in China, the multi-vendor e-mall functions in English making it easier to navigate and order as compared to Taobao. Each product comes with buyer protection whereby money is released to sellers after a stipulated time or when you approve of the order. As some listings do not post actual photos but stylize versions of the item, dropping the seller a question or viewing the buyer reviews will give you a better idea of the item. Providing more no-frill home wares, the inventory includes products that range more home décor, lighting and sanitary fixtures. Not boasting too much on furniture sets, Aliexpress is a good e-mall to beautify and organize your home taking on average 2-3 weeks to receive items.
Run by smaller business owners and people clearing their homes, Carousell comprises of listings that are brand new and pre-owned items. The process includes possible bartering if seller doesn’t state otherwise. Carousell is also a good resource to find unique and vintage pieces and even stumble upon great deals that you might not find elsewhere. Speaking direct to sellers with the chat feature allows you to get a feel of the seller before deciding to make a purchase.
As with any e-commerce website, looking through a seller’s or item’s review is important to minimize the risk of dispute. Similarly when dealing with China-based e-malls and Carousell, the items might not always be of the actual product, so asking questions direct to seller allows you to assess and do your due diligence. Now shopping for your home can be as easy as a click.
