Nostalgic themes have a certain allure to them. Colonial black and white, Retro, Classical and Art Deco are just some themes that even in present day have a distinct charm and magic that fans of the respective themes want injected into their homes. The homeowner of this project showcase is no different. Contemporary living with a balance of retro charm is the essence of this home. This issue, we bring you on a walkthrough of Yesteryear Allure.

An intermediate terrace home that holds surprises pass its contemporary minimalist exterior. Much like an abstract painting, there is more than meets the eye and hints of it reveal itself from the car porch. Peranakan tile accents embedded into the entrance staircase and retro style black glazed railings set the tone for the rest of the home.

Entering in, you are immediately in sight of the retro-style stairwell. With blank walls around, retro and minimalism can still work well together. Picking a couple of distinct theme features is all you need to effortlessly set the stage.

There are two ways to dress up walls – one way is creating a feature wall through texture and colour and another is by hanging an outstanding painting. The homeowner went with the latter. The plain walls work as a blank canvas which gives the homeowner the flexibility to transform the space as time passes.

Instead of opting for 90-degree angle walls, the dining space pays homage to the arch entrances that were a popular interior trend of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

The dining area located next to the kitchen is highly practical but taking the design aspect a notch further can be viewed with the addition of a foldable kitchen window. This gives the option of integrating the two spaces which is a convenient option when entertaining guests.

The kitchen maximises the boundary walls by placing counter tops and storage space around. This makes cooking prep more conducive without the need for an island counter.

To the back of the kitchen reveals a common bathroom. In a distinct grey feel, the bathroom stands out by working in with mix of contrasting patterns but translated through a complimentary monochromatic palette.

The second floor is where rooms are located. With intermediate terrace homes, rooms are best situated toward the front and the back. These are the two positions that windows are typically placed to allow air and light to flow through.

The master bedroom, is the standout room in most homes. This home is no different with the inclusion of a walk-in wardrobe on one end and a luxurious en suite bathroom to the other.

Like the common bathroom below, the master bedroom is also designed in grey but, in a lighter variation. Grey colour palettes are a good medium that encompasses neutrality and classic elegance at the same time. With a myriad of tiles available in the market, you can even include a touch of luxury through marble or marble-patterned tiles.
