PROJECT SHOWCASE: BUILDING BONDS (April 2024/Issue 167)

A home is more than mere brick and concrete, it is also a dwelling that brings the family together. What better than to have a home that is built to bring a multi-generational household together, such as this home that was designed for just that. This issue we bring you on a walkthrough of this contemporary abode.

In a tranquil neighbourhood, this semi-detached home has seen a major transformation from its past single-storey form. Now, towering at two and a half storeys with an estimated built-up of about 7,600 sq. ft. This home with its wide frontage is designed to accommodate up to four cars. Maximising a home’s built up is easy but, balancing design is just as important in any Nic & Wes home.

Stepping into the abode, we are greeted by a towering feature wall and an open concept design revealing a mezzanine level. A grand first impression to behold.

Walking in further, a counter serves as a useful option to enjoy a quick breakfast while the formal dining is just next to it for a family meal.

To the opposite side, a powder room stays semi-concealed and yet accessible for visitors.

To keep heavy cooking away from the dining as well as the common areas, the main kitchen is tucked to the back of the home and contained.

Servicing a two and a half storey multi-generational home, installing an elevator is not only useful but in today’s context highly practical. This way, the granny room does not require to be confined to the ground floor for easy accessibility but can be located on any level.

The mezzanine floor which is a couple of steps up reveal a wide and open area of usable space which in this case serves as a communal entertainment area for the family to congregate for a movie or to listen to some music. Designed with openness in mind, the melodic piano tunes can flood down while natural light and ventilation easily fills the mezzanine from the ground floor.

We appreciate when homeowners understand that maximisation of walls and closed up spaces do not always equate good design. Within this home, balconies are placed at various points to open the space and make for strategic viewpoints to connect with nature and the outside world which in an age of technology, we can sometimes take for granted.

As most tall homes will understand, the higher levels can get warm in the day. Something that Nic & Wes works to ensure that there is a good flow of cross winds throughout the home so that hot air will circulate out. With the placement of windows and balconies throughout the home, there is abundant potential for cross ventilation throughout the home.

The attic with some clever cabinetry reveals a beautifully concealed bathroom keeping the space minimalist in design. The bathroom on the other hand becomes a tranquil hideaway to unwind with a soak at the end of a long day. Intimate and peaceful, just some of the characteristics a room should encompass.

Home means different things to each homeowner, at Nic & Wes we take those perspectives and transform it into a tangible dwelling that will be the setting for many memorable memories in the chapters of your life.
