IN FOCUS: TEA PARTY PLANNINGBy Nicole Kow
Tea parties are the perfect way to get creative when entertaining. It’s also an ideal time to gather close friends and family over sweet treats and picturesque settings. This issue we break down the key elements on how to achieve a design centric and photo worthy setting for your next tea party that will impress your guests.
Tip 1: Choose a theme
There is something quite whimsical about tea time, maybe it stems from childhood memories of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland. Settling on a specific theme gives one the freedom to get creative yet specific be it quirky and colourful or even chic and classic. No matter what you choose, deciding on a theme allows you to set the tone for the style going forward, just like a roadmap. Like us, we chose to go in a more whimsical angle.
Tip 2: Decide on a colour palette
Now that you’ve settled on a theme, narrow it down to a group of colours to be used – a main colour and accent colors. The main color will create the focus and it doesn’t even have to be fancy. White can be a great neutral to start with before piling on accent colors through the décor. If you are afraid that a plain white tablecloth is lacking, look for décor with texture such as a runner or placemats that will add dimension. Accent colours can translate through cutlery, ornamental décor, plates and teacups just to name a few. As accent colours are just hints, grouping other colours will produce a good visual balance to the setting. In our table setting, we decided on pastel blue as the main color with accent colors of greens, pinks and white.
Tip 3: Outdoor or Indoor
The dining table can be an ideal spot for a sit-down tea party or even the sitting room as a more informal option. Alternatively, an outdoor location like a porch or by the pool takes advantage of its natural environment as a rich visual backdrop. We chose to have our tea party by the pool which complimented the colour palette of pastel blues quite nicely.
It’s all in the details! A good tea party isn’t just about putting pretty things together. It’s also about incorporating little characteristics about you into the theme. For example, I picked up calligraphy as a hobby so I incorporated that by personally writing out the food labels.
Similarly, as it was a whimsical theme personalizing the drinks by naming them “Mermaid Tears” and “Unicorn Tears” creates unique features that will definitely become talking points during the party. This is where your creativity can run wild!
Tip 5:Table Settings
If you have space to play with, use it! Creating designated tables for food and drink gives you the freedom to create beautiful table settings. An ideal would be to have the main table where everyone can congregate, a food table and a beverage table. This way, you can take advantage of the main table’s space to include décor pieces for an exquisite centerpiece. Play with heights. Include candle stands, flowers, cake stands on top of a runner for a visual feast that ties in with the theme. Using boxes and books are also a great way to create levels and to place a couple of sweet treats along the table. Keeping the food and beverage table separate also allows guests free range to move and mingle.
If space however is an issue, incorporate the food and drinks into the table setting. Instead of placing more décor like the example above, choose complimentary trays, tiered dessert stands, plates and cups to hold the food and drink as part of the table décor. Adding small ornaments and/or flowers in between may work in as a nice décor idea too. While creating levels allows an interesting flow and maximisation of space.
A good place to gather things for your tea party may begin right at home. Don’t’ be afraid to work in simple glassware like jam bottles or antique pieces such as a silver tea set or even quirky ornaments from any part of your home into the look. With the range of pretty disposable options for plates and drinkware, you can even keep the tea party low maintenance like we did with our find of pretty paper plates. Planning for a tea party definitely needs some forethought but the results at the end will make it all worthwhile. I hope this tip guide will get you excited to plan your next tea party.
