IN FOCUS: COLOUR WONDERFUL By Nicole Kow
Colour palettes are undeniably alluring. Bold jewel tones of emerald, ruby and sapphire hues bring on the impressions of bold and strong while pastel pink, blue and purple invoke the aura of calmness and youth. It is these very colours that stop us in our tracks whether we realize it or not. For instance, as we walk along the streets of Orchard Road a striking store display usually catches our eyes, more often than not because of the colour choices. Colours attract us in one way or another and yet many of us run from it when we design our homes. Or maybe, we are just unsure where we could add a splash of it in our abodes. This issue, we take a look at how some of our brave clients used colours in their homes.
Starting from one of the very first things we see when we enter the gates of a home would be the front door. Taking cue from this home, a jewel tone emerald hue makes a gorgeous statement amongst white walls. Opting for a darker tone may sound intimidating but, it is a perfect option when first venturing into colours as the results are not stark or bright. They instead bring just the right pop of luxe especially when paired with neutral tones.
Probably the most common area to place colour are on walls. And with the multitude of paint options available, finding the right shade isn’t too difficult. With walls, there are two ways to approach painting them; one is to paint just a single wall which becomes a focal feature or alternatively, coat the entire room. However, depending on the shade used the feel will differ.
For example, this home theatre room was aimed to feel intimate and cosy thus opting for a Byzantium purple helped darken the room to acheive that very feel.
In contrast, picking a pastel shade sweetens a bedroom and brightens the space.
If you are intending on installing cabinetry in your home, this is another option to instill colour. Especially easier when customizing cabinetry, your designer/carpenter will provide you with a catalogue of veneer or laminate which many a time include colour options. We have had the opportunity of installing coloured cabinetry for our clients which have ranged from bedroom wardrobe to kitchen doors. If you are more daring and sure of your design direction, coloured cabinetry may be the option for you as it’s more of a committed choice. Tiles
Besides paint, tiles are probably the next popular way of adding pops of colour to your home. There has been a rise in interesting tile design options in recent years with geometrics, prints and of course colour. No matter which theme you are aiming at, there will most definitely be a coloured tile that suits your design. One place that usually consists of coloured tiles would be the bathroom. This bathroom for instance includes mosaic tiles that act as a feature wall within the shower enclosure. Simple and understated yet brings just the right pop to the minimalistic space.
These are just a couple of ways to get started with adding colours to your home which can significantly add some zest to style up your abode.
