WARMTH MODERNITY (AUGUST 2024/Issue 171)
Embarking on a full rebuild offers the exciting opportunity to start anew. By thoughtfully utilizing the available space, you can craft a home that seamlessly integrates your lifestyle preferences and necessities. Each homeowner envisions a unique space tailored to their family’s needs. For this particular family, it was achieving a harmonious balance between shared areas and personal retreats.
Inspired by the Modern style, this semi-detached home with an approximate land size of 3150 sq. ft. and a built-up of 5,500 sq. ft. exudes warmth through carefully chosen materials like wood and a colour palette that leans toward inviting, warm tones. Despite being semi-detached, our designers opted for a side offset – rather than maximizing the build-up space – to create the illusion of a detached home. This deliberate design choice not only enhances aesthetics but also allows for well-ventilated and naturally lit rooms facing the open spaces. Balancing maximization with functionality, the layout is thoughtfully curated.
Despite the side offset, the living hall remains remarkably spacious. Unobstructed by walls, the first floor feels open and bright, even when the windows are closed. A dry kitchen space complements the living hall, while a generously sized kitchen at the rear of the home can be closed off during intense cooking sessions.
Increasingly common in homes today, private elevators enhance accessibility, particularly for aging family members. This thoughtful addition also enables homeowners to position the granny room alongside other bedrooms, rather than confining it to the ground floor. This arrangement can foster greater interaction and care for elderly family members. The primary access to each floor is the honey-hued wooden-concrete staircase. To maintain natural illumination in the stairwell, a towering glass window acts as the sunlight source, allowing it to filter through the staircase.
Every level is thoughtfully designed to prioritize spaciousness. The bedrooms feature ensuite bathrooms and walk-in-style closets. Additionally, generously sized workspaces with a pantry create an ideal environment for family members to work efficiently from home.
The topmost floor – the attic – serves as a spacious blank canvas, designed with versatility in mind. Whether it’s hosting guests or transforming into a gym or movie room, the attic offers endless possibilities. What makes it truly special is its half-storey layout, which opens up to a terrace with views of the neighbourhood. It’s the perfect space to unwind at the end of the day.
